Bengaluru: 5 daycare staff booked for cruelty after video shows toddlers being locked in washing machine at Capgemini campus creche

Five women working at an on-campus daycare centre of Capgemini Technology Services India Limited in Bengaluru have been booked after videos showing children being mistreated surfaced. The Bengaluru city police registered a criminal case on 29th June at the HAL Police Station based on a complaint filed by Tilakesh Kumar, a legal-cum-probation officer with the District Child Protection Unit.

The FIR has been filed under charges related to criminal intimidation and cruelty to children. The five daycare workers named in the case are Manjula, Vijayalakshmi, Bhavani, Sindhu and Bindu.

Videos brought the incident to light

According to the complaint, Tilakesh Kumar received several videos on WhatsApp showing children crying while being handled disturbingly. After checking the matter, he found that the women were responsible for looking after children at the daycare centre located inside Capgemini’s Brookfield campus.

The complaint states that instead of taking care of the children, the caregivers physically and mentally troubled them. Crying children were locked inside washing machines to scare them, forced into narrow water-filled pipes and left there for some time, pushed into bathroom spaces, and frightened in different ways. The videos raised serious concerns about the safety of the children.

Children of employees were enrolled at the facility

The daycare centre was being used by employees working at the Capgemini campus, who left their young children there while they were on duty. A police officer said parents and officials were shocked after watching the videos, which showed the toddlers being treated unacceptably by the daycare staff.

Saidulu Adavath, Deputy Commissioner of Police of the Whitefield Division, confirmed that the case has been registered. He said the investigation has started, notices will be issued to the people named in the FIR, and they will be called for questioning as part of the inquiry.

Capgemini temporarily shuts daycare centre

After the matter came to light, Capgemini announced the temporary closure of its on-campus daycare facility in Bengaluru. In an official statement, the company said that the health, safety and wellbeing of its employees and their families remain its top priority.

The company also said it is fully cooperating with the authorities and helping them establish the facts. As a precautionary step, it has been decided to temporarily close the daycare centre until further notice.
