Harry Potter movies’ Professor McGonagall, Dame Maggie Smith, dies at 89

Prolific actor Dame Maggie Smith, best known for her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies, died at the age of 89, her family announced on September 27.

“It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” said her two sons in a statement.

Smith reportedly passed away peacefully in a hospital on Friday morning. Her family and friends were by her side at the time of her death. She is survived by her two sons and five grandchildren.

The iconic actor was a towering figure in the British film industry, having won two Academy Awards in her career, one in 1970 for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1970 and another in 1979 for California Suite.
