Head priest of 1,100-year-old ‘Matth’ killed in brutal knife attack: Devanand Maharaj fatally stabbed by assailants, Rajasthan Police detains six suspects

A shocking incident has emerged from the nearly 1,100-year-old Chandresal Matth in Rajasthan’s Kota district, where Mahant Devanand Maharaj was allegedly stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.

The incident reportedly took place around midnight on Friday (June 5, 2026). According to the police, the attackers entered the monastery armed with weapons, carried out the crime, and fled the scene.

As per media reports, Mahant Devanand Maharaj was asleep in his room when the assailants struck. Before attacking him, they allegedly locked the room of another mahant, Nandanvan Maharaj, from the outside to prevent him from intervening. The attackers then entered Devanand Maharaj’s room and stabbed him multiple times, inflicting severe injuries to his neck and back.

After hearing the commotion, monastery attendants and nearby villagers rushed to the spot. The injured mahant was taken to MBS Hospital in Kota, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The murder has sparked widespread anger among saints, seers, and Hindu organizations. Members of the saint community have begun a protest outside the hospital mortuary, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible.

Police, assisted by forensic experts (FSL) and a dog squad, are currently investigating the case and trying to determine the motive behind the killing.

Speaking at the protest site, Kota SP Tejaswini Gautam said that police have detained six to seven suspects for questioning and expressed confidence that the case will be solved soon.
