A simple interaction turned tense when Munir delivered a long speech, taking almost an hour, without allowing the ulema present to speak or raise their concerns. The situation worsened when he told them, “If you love Iran so much, then go to Iran,” a statement that has now sparked outrage across the community, as reported by CNN-News18.
Several Shia scholars who were present at the gathering said they felt deeply insulted by both the tone and the content of the speech. Allama Nazir Abbas Taqvi tried multiple times to intervene and hold a dialogue, but was not given the opportunity.
The ulema were later assured of a follow-up discussion after dinner, but they were left waiting as the Army Chief left the meeting abruptly. Maulana Hasnain Abbas Gardezi also criticised the nature of the remarks made was not appropriate for such a high-ranking official in the constitution of the country.
This statement regarding Shia sentiment and their links with Iran has been opposed by leaders within the Shia community, who have argued that it challenges their loyalty to Pakistan. The Shia community has pointed out their contribution to the formation of Pakistan, including their leadership within the Muslim League and their financial support for the independence movement.
According to them, religious connections with places like Iran, Iraq, Makkah, and Madina cannot be seen as compromising their loyalty to Pakistan. The issue has now reached mosques and other public platforms as well.
