‘India’s exports have increased despite US tariffs’: Commerce Ministry tells Parliamentary Standing Committee

The Ministry of Commerce has informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce that India’s exports have increased in the April-October period despite tariffs imposed by the US government on various Indian goods.

The increase in exports has been significant, compared to the same April-October period in 2024, the Commerce Ministry has informed.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee is headed by TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen. It has been set up to review India-US relations with focus in recent tariff hikes by the USA on Indian goods. Opposition parties have raised concern over US tariffs on India, asking why is the US imposing tariff on a developing nation, despite India seeing the USA as a key strategic partner.

Complaints from various Tea Boards, Coffee Boards, and Silk Board have been noted by the committee, along with problems faced by the textile industry despite robust domestic demands. The panel is also seeking clarification from the government as to why the prices of domestic petrol and diesel are still high despite a drop in global crude prices.

The Commerce Ministry will submit a detailed written report within two weeks before the standing committee. Congress leader renuka Chaudhary, JDU’s Giridhar Yadav, BJP’s Nishikant Dubey, Praveen Khandelwal, and Ramesh Awasthi are also members of the committee.

For the month of October, India’s exports to the USA registered a 14.5% jump compared to the previous months, despite the US tariffs. After the full force of US tariffs against India became effective on August 27, September saw a drop in US exports, but the October jump has affirmed hopes for the growth chart of the nation. As the US and India negotiate a trade deal, Indian industries have been trying to explore new markets for home goods.
