On Saturday (25th January), former Trinamool Congress MP Jawhar Sircar courted controversy after he passed off a father-daughter duo from Uttarakhand as ‘Kuki and Meitiei pair from burning Manipur.’
Sircar, who is not new to spreading fake news on social media, wanted to peddle propaganda over the sensitive situation in the Northeastern state of Manipur.
In a tweet (archive) on Saturday, he claimed, “How lovely and melodious! I am told they are a Kuki-Meitei pair from burning Manipur!”

The tweet was accompanied by a video of a father-daughter duo singing ‘Hum apki ankhon main.’ The song was originally uploaded on YouTube in May 2023.
The girl in the video is a singer named Shekinah Mukhiya. The man playing the guitar is her father Vikash Mukhiya. Both of them are from the State of Uttarakhand and not ‘burning Manipur.’
The father-daughter duo is famous for singing Hindi and Nepali songs.
Earlier in August 2023, Supreme Court ‘advocate’ Prashant Bhushan peddled similar fake news about Shekinah Mukhiya and her father.
