A shocking case of alleged Islamist radicalism has emerged from Gangavathi town in Koppal district of Karnataka, where a Hindu youth named Chandrashekhar was reportedly attacked for sharing a news update about the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on his Instagram story. The incident has stirred tension in the area, and Hindu organisations have demanded the immediate arrest of the accused.
What happened?
The victim, Chandrashekhar, runs a dry fruit (nuts) business in Gangavathi. Recently, he shared an Instagram story stating that Iranian leader Ali Khamenei had been killed in missile strikes carried out by the United States and Israel. According to Chandrashekhar, the post angered some local radical youths, who allegedly began holding a grudge against him.
Attack inside the shop, threats issued
According to the complaint, Chandrashekhar was working at his shop when a group of 5–6 Islamist radicals arrived there. They surrounded him and began abusing him over the Instagram post. The group accused him of hurting religious sentiments and soon started assaulting him.
The attackers allegedly physically assaulted him and threatened to kill him, reportedly warning that they would enter his house and eliminate him and his family. Fearing for his life, Chandrashekhar rushed to the Gangavathi Town Police Station late at night and sought protection.

Police investigation underway
The police have registered a case based on the victim’s complaint and launched an investigation. Authorities are examining CCTV footage from around the shop to identify the attackers and take legal action.
Residents say that attacking someone for sharing an international news update on social media amounts to an assault on freedom of expression. While the administration has appealed for calm, additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent any escalation of tension.
