Kolkata: Park Street restaurants stop serving beef temporarily, supply of cow meat dries up after BJP govt enforces Animal Slaughter Control Act of 1950

In a positive development, several continental restaurants that used to serve beef (cow meat) in Kolkata’s Park Street area have taken it off their menus.

The development comes days after the Home & Hill Affairs Department of the Government of West Bengal issued a notice reiterating strict enforcement of the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, 1950.

A source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told OpIndia that Mocambo Restaurant and Bar, a historic fine-dining place, has stopped serving beef steak to its customers.

Another popular restaurant, Oly Pub, which came under the spotlight for serving beef to a Hindu Brahmin man, is now telling its customers that the supply of cow meat has been disrupted. Although the restaurant has not taken beef items off its menu, our source informed us that they are temporarily telling its customers no.

According to a report by The Times of India, Nizam’s restaurant at New Market has pulled beef items from the menu. The Zam Zam Restaurant on Noor Ali Avenue has stopped serving beef biriyani, citing supply issues.

The Burger Shop at Rashbehari Avenue took to Instagram to inform that beef burgers were no longer available at the restaurant. Steakyard at Lake Terrace ceased serving beef after the West Bengal Vidhan Sabha election results.

It must be mentioned that the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act specifically prohibits the slaughter of bulls, bullocks, cows, calves, male and female buffaloes, buffalo calves, and castrated buffaloes. The Act clearly states that an animal specified in it cannot be slaughtered without a certificate declaring the animal fit to be slaughtered.
