Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu jointly inaugurated a new Ministry of Defence building in Malé today, during PM Modi’s visit to the island nation. The event, held on the occasion of 60th Independence Day celebrations of Maldives, underscores India’s renewed commitment to its “Neighbourhood First” policy and the strengthening of Indo-Pacific cooperation.

Dhoshimeyna Building, the new office premises of Maldives National Defence Force, has been built with Indian assistance. PM Modi tweeted, “President Muizzu and I inaugurated a new building of the Ministry of Defence in Malé. This is yet another instance of strong India-Maldives cooperation.”

Crowds present at the venue chanted ‘Narendra Modi Zindabad’ as Modi and Muizzu pressed buttons to inaugurate the building.
Ahead of the inauguration of the new building, Maldives National Defence Force presented PM Narendra Modi with the traditional ‘Haiykolhu’, a Maldivian gesture of hospitality and honor. A giant photo of PM Modi was displayed on the front façade of the defence ministry building.
