Manipur violent again: Kuki insurgents attack BSF jawan’s home in Bishnupur, two children dead, their mother injured

In Manipur’s Meitei-dominated Bishnupur district, two minors, including a five-month-old baby, were killed in a bomb attack by allegedly carried out by Kuki insurgents on 7th April at the house of a BSF jawan. The attack was carried out at around 1 am on a house at Moirang Tronglaobi village when the two children were asleep with their mother.

Locals say that a suspected projectile struck the house, causing a powerful explosion which resulted in the on-spot death of the two small kids, one of about 5 years and another an infant. After hearing the explosion, villagers gathered at the damaged house to rescue those stuck inside. Reports say that the BSF Jawan is posted in some other state, while his wife, a nurse, was on maternity leave to care for the infant.

While it is suspected that Kuki insurgents might be behind the attack, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), a forum of Kuki civil society groups, issued a statement denying involvement.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, rushed to the Raj Medicity Hospital to assess the condition of the injured mother who lost her two children in the Tuesday attack.

Taking to X, CM Singh informed about the visit and wrote, “Visited Raj Medicity this morning to assess the condition of the injured mother who tragically lost her two children in last night’s heinous attack at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, Moirang. Directed officials to ensure the highest level of medical care and full support. This barbaric act is an assault on humanity and a deliberate attempt to disrupt Manipur’s hard-earned peace. I condemn it in the strongest terms.”

“Let this be clear, those responsible will be identified and dealt with strictly as per law. Such acts of terror will not be tolerated. Our government remains resolute in safeguarding every citizen. I urge all to stay united and stand firm against forces that seek to disturb our collective harmony,” he added.

Following the incident, unrest has spread in the area, causing alarm and concerns of law and order. The internet was suspended for three days in the Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts.

Manipur has been under the grip of consistent ethnic violence since May 2023, as Kuki militants clash with the Meiteis.

In Moirang, following the death of the children, protesters gathered at the Moirang Police Station premises and set ablaze trucks carrying essential goods. Road blockades were also reported, disrupting movement in the area.
