The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a strong alert against circulating disinformation on social media that falsely attributes statements to External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar claiming India plans to “capture and annex Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK)” and is orchestrating upcoming protests there.
In a post on its official X account on Saturday, the MEA’s fact-check unit labelled the claims as “Fake News Alert!” and urged the public to “stay alert against such false and baseless claims and posts on social media.”

The viral posts, allege that Jaishankar “brazenly declared” India would soon seize AJK, annex it, and “resolve” all issues, while accusing New Delhi of backing the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) to create chaos through planned protests on June 9. The post by Pakistani advocate Hifsa Gillani calls it “naked Indian aggression” and demands the Pakistan government “crush JAAC immediately.”
Another post by advocate Afshan Awan claims that Indian media is “openly revealing” JAAC’s alleged plot for a shutdown in AJK and urges the AJK government to act against “treasonous elements working for Delhi.”
The disinformation appears timed to coincide with rising tensions in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, where the JAAC, a local alliance of traders, transporters, and civil society groups, has called for an indefinite “wheel-jam” and shutter-down strike starting June 9. The protests are the result of long-standing grievances of the locals, including unfulfilled demands from a 2025 agreement with the AJK government.
Some of the issues include abolishing 12 reserved seats in the AJK assembly, providing subsidized flour and electricity, ending elite privileges, and addressing governance concerns. The JAAC says that these are purely domestic matters related to economic hardships and political rights in the region.
In response, the AJK government on Friday banned the JAAC under the Anti-Terrorism Act, declared it a proscribed organisation, and deployed heavy security forces. A travel advisory has also been issued urging tourists and visitors to avoid the area between June 5 and June 20.
The development comes just one day after India lodged a strong diplomatic protest with Pakistan over its decision to hold so-called “General Elections” in Gilgit-Baltistan, part of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), scheduled for June 7. In a statement, MEA said, “The entire Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, including the so-called ‘Gilgit-Baltistan’, are integral and inalienable parts of India as a result of complete, legal and irrevocable accession of Jammu & Kashmir to India in 1947.”
