On Monday (20th January), the Sealdah court sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment for the murder and rape of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Roy has also been asked to pay a fine of ₹50000.
The Judge noted that the case did not fall under the ‘rarest of rare category’ and as such did not merit the death penalty. He has directed the West Bengal government to pay ₹17 lakhs as compensation to the victim’s family.
Two days earlier on Saturday (18th January), the court found him guilty in the ongoing case. Sanjay Roy was arrested on 10th August last year.
He was booked under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita Sections 64 (rape), Sections 66 (punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state) and 103 (punishment for murder).
The day-to-day hearing in the case began on 11th November 2024. It must be mentioned that Sanjay Kar was a ‘civic volunteer’ with the Kolkata police.
