‘Take care of my children if something happens to me’: Female judicial officer, who was gheraoed by mob in Muslim-dominated Malda, pleads for help

A day after a mob trapped 8 judicial officers (including 3 women) inside the BDO office in Malda’s Kaliachak, an audio clip of one of the female victims went viral on social media.

The clip, which was shared by Republic Bangla, showed one of the female judicial officers requesting the Calcutta High Court to take care of her children in case something untoward happened to her.

“Calcutta High Court, take care of my children if something happens to me,” the woman had said.

In another video, the same female judicial officer was heard desperately seeking for help.

She said, “Our car suffered an accident. Please communicate it to the registrar, sir…Our pilot car has suffered an accident due to these hurdles…We are travelling alone.”

Tension gripped West Bengal’s Malda district on Wednesday evening(1st April) after a large mob surrounded and gheraoed seven judicial officers at the Block Development Officer (BDO) office in Kaliachak-II, a Muslim-dominated area. The officers, including four women, had been deployed to verify documents of voters whose names were marked “under adjudication” during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India.

According to officials, the situation quickly escalated as a crowd gathered outside the BDO office, preventing the officers from leaving. This led to a serious situation, prompting the district authorities, including the Superintendent of Police and the Additional District Magistrate, to rush to the spot at 11 pm. A large police force was deployed at the spot to bring the situation under control.
