The Modi government emphasised tri-services integration to ensure smooth coordination between the Navy, Air Force, and the Army. This imperative resulted in the creation of the post of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) in 2019.
The government is reportedly working on a theaterization plan under which the tri-services and their resources shall be integrated into specific theatre commands. It is for deployment under a unified command structure.
Reports say that under this plan, each command will be entrusted with specific geographical regions, combining the resources of the Army, Navy and Air Force, for operational roles.
In this direction, the Modi government has taken crucial steps, including standardisation of equipment, common supply chains for logistics and procurement, combined training at all levels, as well as increased cross-postings to enhance jointness and integration among the tri-services.
The Armed Forces are increasing their understanding of each other’s capabilities and challenges; however, the tri-services are yet to arrive at a consensus on the formation of theatre commands.
