Iran on Tuesday claimed that its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy had captured an advanced unmanned American submarine near the entrance of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, adding another dramatic dimension to the months-long conflict in West Asia.

According to a statement broadcast by Iranian state television, the IRGC said its naval forces intercepted the US military vessel at dawn during what it described as a “complex intelligence and operational action.” Tehran claimed the submarine was among the most modern unmanned and autonomous underwater systems operated by the United States.
The announcement comes as tensions remain sharply elevated across the region, with Iran maintaining its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. The narrow waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is a crucial route for global energy shipments.
The IRGC portrayed the operation as the result of sophisticated intelligence gathering, claiming that Iranian forces detected and intercepted the American unmanned submarine before taking control of it. The Guards did not immediately provide details about the submarine’s model, its condition or precisely how it was seized.
The alleged capture could have significant strategic implications. Unmanned underwater vehicles can be used for surveillance, intelligence collection, reconnaissance and other maritime operations, making them valuable assets in monitoring naval activity in contested waters.
