Uzbekistan: Sadarul Anam murders Hindu medical student from Kerala, accused used to force victim to convert to Islam

In a disturbing incident, a 22-year-old medical student from Pilapuzha, near Haripad, Kerala, was brutally beaten to death with a laptop by her classmate Sadarul Anam in Uzbekistan. A case was registered by the Haripad Police on Wednesday (8th July) based on a complaint filed by the victim’s parents to the District Police Chief. 22-year-old Anam, a native of Pulamanthole in Malappuram, has been arrested by the Uzbek authorities.

According to reports, the victim, Savariya Basanth’s maternal uncle, Janeesh, said that Sadarul Anam had been forcing her to convert to Islam, but she refused. He travelled to Uzbekistan to bring her mortal remains back to India. Savariya Basanth was a first-year MBBS student at Bukhara State Medical Institute in Uzbekistan, and Sadarul Anam was her classmate.

The complaint filed by the victim’s family stated that her body bore multiple injuries, indicating that she was subjected to severe assault. “Fellow students informed me about the attempts at religious conversion. The attack was not an immediate provocation. She suffered brutal marks of torture from her legs to her head. So we decided to conduct a second postmortem to unravel the mystery,” Janeesh said. Her body was brought to Kerala, and a second postmortem was conducted on her body at Alappuzha Medical College. Her last rites were performed at her residence in Pallippad on Thursday, following a second post-mortem.

Savariya had completed her first semester with good scores at Bukhara State Medical University, where she enrolled in December last year. Her mother, Mini, used to stay in touch with her over the phone. However, her family could not reach her last week, on Friday, after which they contacted the University administration. That’s when they found out about the lethal attack on her.

Savariya had completed her higher secondary education at VV HSS Naduvattam in Pallippad. Her relatives and neighbours described her as a bright student who actively participated in the National Service Scheme and arts and cultural programmes. She has a younger brother, Savanth, who studies in Class 9 at Holy Angels School, Pallippad. Her father, Basanth, works in Kuwait. He returned to Kerala after the incident.
