15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has created history by making his much-awaited debut for Team India in the second T20 International against England. The left-handed opening batsman from Samastipur in Bihar became the youngest-ever debutant in Indian men’s international cricket at the age of 15 years and 99 days, thereby shattering the long-standing record previously held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who had made his India debut at 16 years and 205 days in 1989.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced the milestone on its social media handles, describing it as “a historic day for Indian cricket” and sharing a graphic of the youngster in the national jersey. Sooryavanshi earned his cap in the ongoing five-match T20I series in England after a string of impressive domestic and IPL performances that left selectors with little choice but to fast-track the prodigy.

Sooryavanshi received his maiden India cap from Tilak Varma after an inspiring speech by Gautam Gambhir, before being embraced by his teammates. While he was selected in the team, he was not picked in the team that played two matches against Ireland and the first match against England.
He was selected for senior team after a successful tri-series last month featuring ‘A’ teams of India, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan. India A won the tournament with Sooryavanshi scoring 94 runs off just 29 balls against Sri Lanka.
Sooryavanshi’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric. In the IPL 2026 season, playing for Rajasthan Royals, the teenager delivered a record-breaking campaign, amassing 776 runs in 16 matches at a blistering strike rate of 237.31. He smashed 72 sixes, breaking Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the most sixes in a single IPL season, and walked away with the Orange Cap for the highest run-scorer along with the prestigious MVP award.
Even before this explosive IPL outing, the young batter had been turning heads. He became the youngest player to secure an IPL contract at just 13 and later etched his name in history as the youngest T20 centurion at 14, striking the second-fastest hundred in IPL history.
His fearless strokeplay, combined with remarkable maturity for his age, has drawn comparisons with the greats and generated unprecedented excitement among fans and experts alike.
Hailing from a modest background in Bihar, Sooryavanshi’s journey from local grounds to donning the India cap in Manchester symbolises the depth of talent emerging from across the country.
