On Wednesday (29th July), members of Waris Punjab De, the outfit headed by jailed pro-Khalistani MP Amritpal Singh, staged a street protest in Chandigarh seeking Singh’s release.

As the protestors turned unruly, the police deployed water cannons. During the protest, a supporter of Amritpal Singh even climbed over a water cannon vehicle.

The workers of the radical pro-Khalistan outfit, Waris Punjab De, not only demand the release of Amritpal Singh, but also 20 others known as “Bandi Sikhs”.
These prisoners, known as Bandi Sikhs, were jailed for involvement in different anti-India incidents, including the assassination of former Chief Minister of Punjab Beant Singh.
Currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail, Amritpal Singh was arrested in April 2023 after a month-long manhunt. He was booked under the NSA and implicated in the Ajnala police station attack, during which armed supporters assaulted police personnel.
Singh and his associates are accused in the Ajnala police station attack case. On 23 February 2023, a mob of about 200-250 people armed with deadly weapons led by Amritpal attacked Ajnala police station to free one of their associates from custody.
Back then, the police had put up barricades to stop the mob, but Amritpal’s supporters broke them and entered the station and freed their companion. Six policemen were also injured in the attack. After which the police registered cases against Amritpal and some of his associates under serious sections.
During raids at locations linked to Amritpal Singh, pro-Khalistani material and weapons were recovered. The NSA was revoked in April 2026.
He won the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Khadoor Sahib while in jail, securing 4,04,430 votes and a 38.62% vote share. He was granted four-day parole to take the oath as an MP before being returned to Dibrugarh jail.
The demands for Amritpal Singh’s release come as the Khalistani separatist has made several failed attempts at reaching the Parliament.
Recently, Amritpal Singh wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking permission to attend the ongoing Monsoon Session from 29th July to 13th August. Although Singh is an elected member of the Lok Sabha, he has not been allowed to attend any session of Parliament, apparently due to his anti-national stance and activities.
Singh made a similar request in December 2025 when he approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court after the Punjab government rejected his request for temporary release to attend the Winter Session.
