West Bengal: Bank freezes 3 accounts of TMC, holding ₹440 crore after rebel party faction seeks inquiry into the source of funds

After some rebel TMC MLAs wrote to the police seeking an investigation into the party’s funding sources, the debt operations on three bank accounts linked to the party were frozen by a private bank in Kolkata. According to reports, 10 TMC MLAs aligned with Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee had given a complaint to the cybercrime police station under the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, seeking registration of an FIR and a detailed investigation into the accounts.

The bank accounts, holding around ₹440 crore, have been placed under debt freeze, preventing withdrawals or outward transactions, though credits may continue to be received. The bank informed about the action to the officer-in-charge of the cybercrime police station of Bidhannagar city police on Friday (June 19, 2026).

In the complaints, the MLAs questioned the source of funds deposited in the bank accounts of the party and sought an inquiry into the financial transactions carried out through them. One of the complaints questioned whether the money was sourced from unlawful activities, including suspected cut-money collections, diversion of public funds and proceeds of scams.

“It has come to my knowledge through reliable circumstances and surrounding developments that certain funds, arising out of illegal activities, including misuse of influence, dishonest financial dealings and suspected unlawful collection of money, may have been routed and subsequently deposited into bank accounts,” one of the complaints stated.

TMC leader and former party treasurer Aroop Biswas had also written to the bank, demanding freezing of the party’s accounts, highlighting the split in the party’s Parliamentary and legislative wings. “In order to safeguard the funds of the organisation. I request your good office to maintain the status quo and refrain from permitting any debit transactions or changes in operational mandates in respect of the following account,” Biswas stated in his letter to the bank.

As the rift within the party deepens, the two rebel factions led by former minister Aroop Biswas and Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee are vying for control over the party’s organisational and financial apparatus.
