On Friday, December 20, a United States District Court held Israeli technology company NSO Group, maker of Pegasus spyware, liable for targeting the devices of 1,400 WhatsApp users. The spyware was allegedly used by its government clients to infect the devices of several WhatsApp users.
The court verdict has come five years after the Meta-owned WhatsApp sued the NSO Group in the US District Court of North California in October 2019.
The District Court concluded that NSO Group had violated sections of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), and California Computer Data Access and Fraud Act (CDAFA).
The Court also ruled that NSO had violated WhatsApp’s terms of service.
