On 3rd March (Wednesday), Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City stated that the Iranian regime has been cruel to its own populace. “The Iranian government has engaged in systematic repression of its own people, even killing thousands of Iranians who were seeking to express the most basic forms of dissent earlier this year. It is a brutal government,” he outlined during an official event.

Mamdani added, “I’ve also said that while I may be a young mayor, I am old enough to remember the devastating consequences of our country pursuing a war with the intent of regime change in that very same region not that many years ago.”
“Today’s military strikes on Iran – carried out by the United States and Israel – mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression. Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theatre of war. Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace,” he had written after Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with other senior officials, were wiped out in Israeli strikes on 28th February.

“I am focused on making sure that every New Yorker is safe. I have been in contact with our Police Commissioner and emergency management officials. We are taking proactive steps, including increasing coordination across agencies and enhancing patrols of sensitive locations out of an abundance of caution. Additionally, I want to speak directly to Iranian New Yorkers: you are part of the fabric of this city – you are our neighbours, small business owners, students, artists, workers and community leaders. You will be safe here,” Mamdani had claimed.
The tensions in the Middle East have escalated following Khamenei’s death, as a sequence of attacks and retaliatory hits have been initiated, jeopardising the security situation in the region.
