The battle took place at Talikota, today a town in northern Karnataka, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) to the southeast of the city of Bijapur. Following the war, massive destruction of the Vijayanagara Empire was executed resulting in the ruins that are to date seen in the region of Hampi, Karnataka.
Herman Kulke while referring to Suryavamsi Emperor Gajapati Kapilendra Deva who ruled in the 15th century said, "Kapilendra deva became the greatest Hindu ruler of his day."
On the day of the Rathayatra, the Gajapati ruler of Kalinga becomes a sweeper for one day when the emperor sweeps the chariot of Mahaprabhu with a golden handled broom as his servant.
Harihara was the first King of Vijayanagara (now Hampi). After him Bukka Raya’s reign started. His son Akampana was a great commander and expanded his kingdom over all of South India, parts of Odisha, and parts of Bahmani Empire. Gandadevi was his wife.
