The incident took place around 2:15 pm, just after Jahagirdar was leaving a local crematorium on his two-wheeler after attending a ritual. According to the police, two unidentified men on a motorcycle intercepted him and opened fire using two pistols.

Jahagirdar was hit several times and collapsed on the road while the shooters sped away from the scene. People nearby rushed to help, and he was first taken to the Sakhar Kamgar Hospital before being moved to a private facility for better treatment. However, Somnath Gharge, the Superintendent of Police for Ahilyanagar, later confirmed that Jahagirdar died from his injuries at the hospital.

The police have already started a full investigation and registered a murder case at the Shrirampur police station. While the attackers remain at large, investigators have been scanning CCTV footage from across the area. They managed to find some blurry images of the two suspects and even a partial look at their motorcycle’s number plate.

Multiple police teams are now out searching for them. Authorities are looking into various motives, including the possibility that this was a revenge killing or linked to his long history of criminal disputes.

Jahagirdar was a well-known figure with a heavy criminal record, involved in 18 different cases ranging from extortion and illegal sand mining to murder and terrorism. Way back in 2006, he was even arrested in Nashik for leaking sensitive Army information. Despite his reputation, he had strong ties to local politics.

He was one of the accused in the incident of five coordinated low-intensity blasts that took place at JM Road in Pune on 1 August 2012. Indian Mujahideen was suspected to be behind the bombings, and Bunti Jahagirdar arrested in January 2012 for allegedly supplying arms to the blast suspects. However, he was out on bail since 2023.

His mother was a member of the Nationalist Congress Party and served on the local municipal council, and his cousin was recently elected as a councillor. Because of these connections, the shooting caused a lot of tension in the town, and many local politicians rushed to the hospital after hearing the news.
