In the Koppal district of Karnataka, a Hindu youth was attacked by a Muslim mob simply for helping a Muslim woman. The victim, Venkatesh, was trying to resolve a domestic dispute between a neighbouring Muslim family.
The local police said that Venkatesh and Aziz’s families have been neighbours for about 15 years. Recently, Aziz and his wife, Afia, had a falling out, after which Afia left the house with the children. She went to the bus station, planning to go to her parents’ house. After that, Aziz requested Venkatesh to talk to Afia and request her to return to prevent the family from breaking up.
Accordingly, Venkatesh went to retrieve Afia and the children from the bus stand. However, some Muslim youths, seeing Venkatesh with the woman and children, misunderstood the situation. Alleging an illicit relationship with the woman, the Muslim mob brutally thrashed the Hindu youth. His mobile phone and cash were also taken away during the attack.
Locals who knew both the families and were also aware of the situation tried to explain the situation to the mob, but they didn’t listen and continued to assault Venkatesh.

After the incident, a case was registered against Azmeer, Khajafeer, Indrawali, and other men involved in the crime. Speaking about the police action taken in the matter, Koppal Superintendent of Police Ram L. Arasiddhi said that a case has been registered under sections of robbery and kidnapping, and four accused have been arrested. The police also stated that Venkatesh was not involved in any illicit relationship and had only gone there with the intention of helping.
However, after the case was registered against the Muslim youths, a large crowd of Muslims led by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) gathered at the police station and created a ruckus. They demanded that a case against Venkatesh also be registered. SDPI activists claim that the girl is 17 years old, and therefore, Venkatesh should be prosecuted under the POCSO Act.
