A magistrate’s court in Mansa, Gandhinagar, on Monday convicted leftwing propagandist masquerading as journalist, Ravi Nair, in a criminal defamation case filed by Adani Enterprises Ltd, sentencing him to one year in prison and imposing a fine.
The case arose from a complaint by Adani Enterprises, the flagship firm of the Adani Group, which accused Nair of posting and circulating a series of tweets that the company said were false, malicious and damaging to its reputation. According to the company, the posts were aimed at eroding public trust and shaking investor confidence in the conglomerate.
During the proceedings, Adani Enterprises contended that the tweets went beyond the bounds of fair comment or legitimate criticism and instead amounted to criminal defamation under the law. The court, after examining the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, concluded that the company had been able to substantiate its allegations.
In its order, the magistrate held Nair guilty of criminal defamation and awarded him a one-year jail term along with a monetary penalty, bringing the high-profile case to a decisive close at the trial court level.
