West Bengal Police under the Mamata Banerjee-led government have seized the properties worth around ₹11 crore belonging to a relative of suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Humayun Kabir in connection with a drug trafficking case. A senior police officer confirmed the development on Tuesday, 10th February.
According to Murshidabad Superintendent of Police Dhritiman Sarkar, a total of 14 properties are being attached. These include land, houses, commercial establishments in areas such as Naldahari in Lalgola, 15 bank accounts, and several vehicles. The assets belong to Shariful Islam, who is the father-in-law of Kabir’s daughter.
The SP said the action was initiated after allegations surfaced that the properties were acquired through illegal narcotics trade over the past few years. He added that the properties were believed to be disproportionate to Shariful Islam’s known sources of income. The process began after a lower court passed an order under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
“Police have started the procedure to attach 14 properties of Shariful Islam, valued at ₹10.73 crore. The legal process for confiscation began on 1st January this year. After receiving necessary approvals from higher authorities, the seizure operation commenced on Monday, 9th February. We will share further details once the investigation is completed,” SP Sarkar said.
The police action follows the arrest of Ziaur Rahman, a relative of Shariful Islam, who was caught with around 500 grams of narcotic substances on 25th March last year. During the investigation into that case, police claimed they found links to a larger drug trafficking network. This reportedly led them to examine the source of Shariful Islam’s assets.
Officials said that as part of the ongoing investigation, financial records and property documents were scrutinised, after which the attachment process was initiated.
More properties sealed on second day
On Tuesday morning, police from Lalgola Police Station resumed their action and sealed six more properties belonging to the in-laws of Kabir’s daughter. These properties, located in different parts of the district, are estimated to be worth around ₹8 crore.
Among the assets sealed on the second day were brick kilns and commercial shops. Over the two days, police action has covered properties worth more than ₹18 crore in total.
Political war of words
Humayun Kabir, who recently floated the Janata Unnayan Party (JAP) after being suspended from the TMC, has strongly denied the allegations. He called the police action “politically motivated” and said he would approach the Calcutta High Court against the seizure.
Kabir claimed that his daughter’s father-in-law is involved in legitimate businesses, including running a brick kiln and dealing in land. He maintained that the assets were legally acquired.

Kabir’s daughter, Nazma Sultana, also said that her family was being targeted due to a political vendetta. She said there was no business relationship between her father-in-law and the accused.
“Just look at the timing. All these allegations surfaced after my father was suspended from TMC. My father-in-law has no links with drug trafficking. He is a successful businessman,” she said.
Meanwhile, TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh rejected the political vendetta claims. He said the case had been registered even before Kabir was dissociated from the party.
Who is Humayun Kabir?
Humayun Kabir is a former TMC MLA who laid the foundation stone for a proposed “Babri Masjid” structure in Muslim dominated Murshidabad, West Bengal. After he announced plans to build a replica of the disputed structure that once stood in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, the TMC suspended him. However, Kabir went ahead with the foundation ceremony, which received support from sections of the local Muslim community.
Following his suspension, he floated the Janata Unnayan Party and declared that he would contest the upcoming Assembly elections. Kabir is now attempting to build a consolidated front against Mamata Banerjee by bringing together smaller Islamist and minority based outfits to challenge both the TMC and the BJP.
He has backed ISF MLA Naushad Siddiqui’s call for an anti TMC, anti BJP alliance and earlier announced plans to ally with AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. The JUP has also approached the Left and the Congress to join the proposed alliance.
