Uttar Pradesh government announces 80% salary hike for Shiksha Mitras, over 1.75 lakh para-teachers to benefit

In a significant move addressing the demands of para-teachers in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a substantial salary increase for Shiksha Mitras and Anudeshaks in the state assembly on Friday. The CM earlier in the assembly had said that his govt will announce the hike soon.

The monthly honorarium for Shiksha Mitras will rise from ₹10,000 to ₹18,000, marking an ₹8,000 or 80% increment, while Anudeshaks will now receive ₹17,000 per month instead of the around ₹10,000 they were getting. These changes are set to take effect from April 1, 2026.

The hike in salaries comes after nearly nine years without a pay revision for these education workers, whose last major hike occurred in 2017, when the salaries of Shiksha Mitras were raised from ₹3,500 to ₹10,000.

Shiksha Mitras, introduced in 2002 to bolster rural education amid teacher shortages, have been vocal about their need for better compensation and job security. Approximately 1.47 lakh Shiksha Mitras and over 28,000 Anudeshaks are expected to benefit from this decision, potentially enhancing their financial stability and motivation to improve educational outcomes in the state.

In addition to the salary boost, the government has introduced flexible transfer options, allowing Shiksha Mitras who were promoted to assistant teachers and posted in distant districts to apply for placements closer to their homes.

Furthermore, these workers and their families will gain access to cashless medical treatment up to ₹5 lakh, aligning their benefits with those of regular government teachers. This health coverage is also slated to roll out in April.
