Child marriages in Assam reduces by 84% for girls and 91% for boys after Himanta Biswa Sarma govt launched a massive crackdown

Assam has registered a significant decline in the number of child marriages over the last few years, with a decrease of 84% in cases where girls below 18 years are involved, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday, February 21. He also shared that marriages involving boys below 21 years have reduced by 91%. This significant decline came after the Assam government launched a massive crackdown on underage marriages in the state.

Posting on X, the Chief Minister said the change came after the government decided to strictly enforce the law and take firm action. “We decided to act, and we are witnessing the difference. By enforcing and making our intentions clear, we are safeguarding childhood, supporting mothers, and holding people accountable,” he posted.

Along with the reduction in child marriages, the government has also seen a 75% decline in teenage pregnancies. Sarma further added that in cases related to child marriage, the police have already filed charge sheets in 95% of the cases that have been registered.

This is a clear indication that the government is committed to ensuring that every child in Assam is safe and has the opportunity to live with dignity.

According to UNICEF, child marriage has severe consequences. Girls who marry before the age of 18 are more likely to be victims of domestic violence and are less likely to complete their education. Early pregnancy also increases health risks.

Child marriage pushes girls out of school, and it also affects their ability to earn a stable income and their emotional well-being. Over time, these challenges not only impact families but also slow down overall growth and development.

The Assam government claims that its continuous crackdown and awareness efforts are aimed at putting an end to this cycle.
