A 43-year-old Congress worker named Debdeep Chatterjee was beaten to death by TMC goons in West Bengal’s Asansol in the early hours of Saturday, 25th April, after a minor dispute near his home turned violent. The incident took place in front of his wife and 10-year-old son, leaving the family in shock.
According to the victim’s wife, Piyali Chatterjee, the family was returning home from a birthday party around 1 am when the incident happened. “My husband was driving the car. As soon as we reached in front of our housing complex in Asansol town, our car happened to dash into a motorbike parked on the roadside,” she said.

She added that a group of goons who were sitting nearby approached them immediately and stopped the car. “My husband got out of our car and apologised for the incident, but they started quarrelling,” she said.
Piyali said her husband even tried to calm the situation by mentioning that he would call a local Congress leader, Prasenjit Puitandy, who is also the secretary of their housing society. However, the situation quickly escalated.
Assault in front of family
“Suddenly, the youths started beating up my husband. My son and I requested them with folded hands to spare him, but they went on assaulting my husband,” she said.
During the assault, one of the attackers punched and pushed Debdeep to the ground. “He fell on the road, and as his head hit the surface, he fell unconscious,” Piyali recalled.
Debdeep was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, local Congress leaders claimed that the attackers were linked to aides of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor. However, the councillor, Animesh Das, denied any connection.
“I am out of station. I have no idea about the incident. But the accused persons are in no way connected with my party or me. The police will investigate the matter,” he said.
Congress leaders staged a protest outside the Asansol South police outpost, demanding swift action. Prasenjit Puitandy said, “Debdeep was very active in our party and attended every campaign before the polls. Trinamool goons killed him because of his political affiliation.”
Police investigation underway
The police have begun investigating the case and have sent the body for a postmortem. A police officer from Asansol South police station said, “The body was sent for postmortem. We will initiate a specific case on the incident once the postmortem report comes.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhruba Das said that initial findings suggest the assault happened outside the housing complex. “We have collected many CCTV footages, three people have been identified,” he said.
