The owner of a multi-storey building on the EM Bypass in Topsia, which has been serving as the temporary headquarters of the Trinamool Congress, popularly known as Trinamool Bhaban, has asked the party to vacate the premises within the next two months.
Montu Saha, proprietor of the well-known company Modern Decorators, cited security concerns following incidents of vandalism outside the building after the Assembly election results as the primary reason for the decision. He emphasised that the move was not influenced by any political pressure or personal differences with the party.
The building, located in the Topsia area along the Eastern Metropolitan (EM) Bypass, has functioned as the party’s main operational and organisational hub for the past four years while work on the permanent Trinamool Bhaban was underway. It became the nerve centre of TMC’s political activities during this period.
Speaking to reporters, Saha confirmed that he has verbally informed the Trinamool leadership about the need to vacate the property. He stated that discussions had taken place with party representatives, who have assured him that the building would be fully vacated within the stipulated two-month timeframe.
“Immediately after the results of the Assembly elections were announced on 4 May, there was widespread vandalism outside that house. If there is any damage to the house, the loss will be mine. There is nothing else in this,” Saha said.
TMC had rented the building to use as its temporary headquarters in 2022 after the party decided to demolish and rebuild its head office at Topsia after winning the 2021 assembly elections. Originally Saha’s building was leased for 2 years, which was extended as construction of the permanent party office was not completed.
While Trinamool Bhaban worked as the nerve centre of the party’s organisational and political activities, party chief Mamata Banerjee and general secretary Abhishek Banerjee worked from different offices. The EM Bypass office hosted important party meetings, press conferences etc on a regular basis.
This development comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress is navigating challenges after the defeat in the elections.
