West Asia conflict: US attacks Iranian military facility on Qeshm Island after Iran’s Bahrain-Kuwait attacks

Amidst a supposed ‘ceasefire’, the US forces launched strikes on an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island, near the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian military facility attacked by the US on 2nd June is near a desalination plant. The US attack came after Iran fired missiles at Kuwait and Bahrain.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that the Iranian missiles failed or were shot down. Two missiles fired by Iran exploded en route to Kuwait, while the ones aimed at Bahrain were intercepted by the American and Bahraini forces.

Reports say that the escalation came after Iran refused to continue talks due to Israel’s resumption of attacks on Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

While the recent attacks hinted at an apparent collapse of the fragile ceasefire, the US authorities insist that their attack was in  “self-defence” and that the ceasefire continues.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the talks are continuing. Trump had reportedly lashed out at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of worsening the conflict in Lebanon and putting key US diplomatic efforts with Iran at risk.
