24 Indian seafarers escape disaster as missile-hit merchant vessel MT Marivex goes up in flames and sinks off Oman coast

On Monday, 8th June, all 24 Indian crew members aboard the merchant vessel MT MARIVEX were rescued safely after the ship caught fire and started sinking near Masirah Island in Oman. The rescue operation was carried out with the support of Omani authorities, while Indian agencies remained in close coordination throughout the emergency.

Indian embassy confirms crew safety

The Indian Embassy in Oman confirmed that all 24 Indian nationals onboard the vessel had been rescued and were safe. The embassy thanked the Omani authorities for their quick response in evacuating the crew and ensuring their well-being during the crisis.

The vessel had reportedly been hit by a missile a day earlier, and the situation worsened on Monday when a fire broke out on board.

Fire reported in the afternoon

According to the Ministry of Shipping, a fire incident was reported on the MT MARIVEX at around 1:30 pm on Monday. The ship was carrying 24 Indian seafarers at the time.

Following the fire, the crew sent out SOS distress calls seeking urgent assistance as the vessel faced a serious emergency at sea.

Distress call reaches seafarers’ union

The All India Seafarers Union said it received an urgent message from one of the crew members, Mr Nilesh, shortly after the incident. He contacted the union requesting immediate help after the fire broke out on board.

The union confirmed that all 24 people on the vessel were Indian seafarers and said it immediately began tracking the situation while coordinating with concerned authorities.

India coordinates rescue efforts

The Ministry of Shipping stated that preliminary information indicated that all crew members were safe and had been rescued by Omani authorities. It added that efforts were being coordinated with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Indian missions abroad, the Indian Navy and the Ministry of Defence to ensure the safety of the seafarers.

The rescue operation highlighted the close cooperation between India and Oman in responding to the maritime emergency.

Union assures support to families

The All India Seafarers Union said it stands firmly with the affected seafarers and their families. It added that it would continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.

The union also expressed hope for the complete safety and well-being of all crew members and for a swift resolution of the situation involving the vessel.
