PM Modi has successfully led the NDA government at the centre for two consecutive terms and continues to lead for a third term.

Before assuming office as the Prime Minister in May 2014, PM Modi served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for nearly 13 years. Prime Minister Modi’s tenure as the head of the NDA government has been marked by several historic decisions, including demonitisation, the abrogation of Article 370 from the Indian Constitution, and India’s counter-terrorism operations such as the Uri Surgical Strike, eradication of Left-Wing terrorism, the Balakot Strike and Operation Sindoor. PM Modi steered the country through several global challenges, like the COVID-19 pandemic and wars.

Before PM Modi, India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, stood as the longest-serving Prime Minister of the country. However, when Nehru assumed office in 1947, he was not democratically elected but ‘appointed’ to the office of Prime Minister. After the first elections were held in 1951-52, he was elected as the Prime Minister and remained in office till his death in 1964. After Nehru, his daughter, Indira Gandhi, India’s first woman Prime Minister, remained in office for 16 years. However, her tenure was not continuous and was divided into two separate stints.
