Three Sikh men were sentenced by a Canadian court on 9th June after they pleaded guilty to an extortion-related shooting and arson incident in the Crescent Beach neighbourhood in Surrey, Canada. The Surrey provincial court sentenced the three men identified as Taranveer Singh, Dayajeet Singh and Harjot Singh.
Taranveer Singh, who pleaded guilty to reckless discharge of a firearm, has been handed a sentence of five years, minus the time served. Dayajeet Singh Billing and Harjot Singh both pleaded guilty to throwing an explosive substance and were granted 27 and 25 months imprisonment, respectively.
The incident took place in the early hours on February 1, 2026, at a home near Crescent Road and 132 Street. According to the Surrey Police, Surrey Police Service (SPS) members assigned to Project Assurance, working in collaboration with SPS’s Major Crime Section, were patrolling in Surrey’s Crescent Beach neighbourhood when they received a call after reports of shots being fired and a small fire at the property. The three men were arrested shortly after, while trying to flee first on foot and then using a ride-share vehicle.
Officers from the SPS, the Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service (LMD IPDS), and the Delta Police Department responded to the call. The SPS officers in the area noticed a suspected vehicle driving nearby. When they approached the vehicle, its occupants fled on foot. However, the suspects, Taranveer Singh, Dayajeet Singh and Harjot Singh, were arrested by the police shortly after near 28 Avenue and 140 Street after getting into a rideshare vehicle.
Meanwhile, the Surrey Fire Services (SFS) members extinguished the small fire by a fence on the property. The residence, which was occupied at the time, was confirmed to be damaged by gunfire. However, there were no reported injuries.
“We were very quickly able to get these three in custody, so the investigation was pretty much wrapped up right from the beginning,” Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said, adding, “Then our investigators were focused on gathering the evidence so Crown Counsel could lay the appropriate charges.”
Notably, while none of the men was charged with extortion-related offences, the incident is still “believed to be extortion-related”.
