Communal tension has erupted in Dehradun after the murder of Vinod Kashyap, a local BJP leader, by a mob of Muslims over an irrigation dispute. The incident took place in Bairagiwala village under the Sahaspur police station area in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand on Saturday evening. Vinod Kashyap was the BJP’s OBC Morcha leader and was also a leader of the Bajrang Dal in the area.
The incident, which began over a minor water dispute in the fields, quickly escalated into violence, leaving Kashyap dead and three others seriously injured. According to police and eyewitness accounts, the clash started when Vinod Kashyap and his family members went to irrigate their fields using a tubewell. A group of Muslims led by one Imtiyaz arrived at the spot and attacked them with sticks, rods, hammers, and sharp weapons. Vinod Kashyap sustained severe head injuries from a hammer blow and succumbed to his wounds during treatment, while three of his relatives were critically injured and hospitalised.
Reportedly, there was a prior financial disagreement involving around ₹14,000 between the two families.
CCTV footage of the attack has surfaced, showing the brutal assault. It can be seen that the clash took place in place of several children.

The murder triggered widespread outrage in the area. Agitated members of Hindu organisations, including Bajrang Dal workers, gathered in large numbers, leading to stone pelting, arson, and protests. The crowd set fire to the houses of the accused, prompting the fire brigade to intervene. The situation deteriorated further with instances of stone pelting on passersby and clashes with police forces. In response, authorities deployed heavy police contingents, including Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel, to restore order in the village.

To prevent the spread of rumours and maintain law and order, internet services were suspended in the region. The National Highway was jammed by protesters demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits. BJP MLA Munna Singh visited the affected family and assured strict action, while also criticising the local police for delays. He warned that the perpetrators would face consequences their generations would remember.
Police have registered a case of murder against 12 named accused and around 25-30 unidentified individuals. Apart from Imtiyaz, another accused has been identified as Aman. As of the latest updates, four people have been arrested in connection with the case.
Bulldozer action was initiated on the properties of the main accused, Imtiyaz, in the presence of police and administration, drawing cheers and ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans from Hindu activists present at the site.

ASP Pankaj Gairola stated that the initial quarrel over water escalated rapidly. He assured that teams have been formed to nab the remaining fugitives and that the administration is committed to impartial investigation and maintaining peace. The deceased’s family has reportedly refused to perform the last rites until all accused are arrested.
The administration has appealed for calm and urged residents not to pay heed to rumours. Additional forces remain deployed in the sensitive Bairagiwala and surrounding areas of Vikasnagar to prevent any further flare-up.
