Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal, during his three-day visit to Seychelles from 27th to 29th June. The visit comes as India and Seychelles celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, with PM Modi attending the island nation’s National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour.
One of the major highlights of the visit will be the Prime Minister’s stop at the Seychelles National Botanical Gardens. Besides meeting Jonathan, PM Modi will also plant a tree, underlining the shared commitment of both countries towards environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
Who is Jonathan?
Jonathan is an Aldabra giant tortoise, also known as a Seychelles giant tortoise, believed to have been born in 1832. At around 194 years old, he holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s oldest living land animal. Although his exact age has not been officially verified, he has lived much longer than the average lifespan of his species.
Over nearly two centuries, Jonathan has witnessed major historical events and generations of change. Today, he remains one of Seychelles’ biggest attractions and continues to draw visitors from around the world.
Despite his age, Jonathan is in good health because of the regular care provided by veterinarians. He has developed cataracts, which have affected his eyesight, and his sense of smell has weakened over time. Even so, he continues to live an active life. His remarkable lifespan has also made him an important subject for scientists studying ageing and longevity.
The Prime Minister’s interaction with Jonathan is also expected to highlight the importance both countries give to wildlife conservation and protecting natural heritage. The tree plantation programme at the botanical gardens is aimed at promoting environmental conservation and climate resilience, especially in the Indian Ocean region.
National Day celebrations and bilateral talks
During the visit, PM Modi will take part in Seychelles’ National Day celebrations and hold talks with President Dr Patrick Herminie. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in maritime security, the blue economy, climate action, defence, capacity building and other areas of mutual interest.
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit the Seychelles Coast Guard Base, where regional security and maritime cooperation are expected to be key topics of discussion. Indian Navy ships and a contingent of Indian defence personnel will also participate in the National Day celebrations.
Building on a strong partnership
PM Modi last visited Seychelles in 2015. Officials believe the current visit will further deepen people-to-people ties and create new opportunities for economic, strategic and developmental cooperation between the two countries.
Ahead of the visit, the Prime Minister described Seychelles as a valued maritime neighbour and an important partner in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR and its commitment to the Global South. He said the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations reflects the mutual trust, shared democratic values, respect for diversity and close friendship between the two countries.
Referring to Seychelles President Dr Patrick Herminie’s State visit to India in February 2026, PM Modi said he looks forward to discussions that will further strengthen the long-standing partnership. He added that both countries will continue working together to improve the lives of their people while promoting peace, security and prosperity across the Indian Ocean region.
