However, Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh acquitted Hussain for offences under Section 120B and 129 of IPC.
The case pertains to the brutal killing of 26-year-old Ankit Sharma during the North-East Delhi anti-Hindu riots on February 25, 2020. Sharma, an IB staffer, went missing amid the communal violence that erupted in the area following protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. His body was recovered the next day from a drain in the Chand Bagh area, bearing multiple stab wounds.
This case was registered on February 26, 2020, on the complaint given by Ravinder Kumar, the father of the deceased Ankit Sharma. In the complaint, Kumar alleged that incidents of stone pelting, brick batting, arson, firing and sabotage had taken place during the anti-CAA protests at Chand Bagh Pulia, Main Karawal Nagar Road. He had alleged that AAP leader Tahir Hussain’s office was located in that area, and he had a lot of goons in his office.
The mob had pelted stones, petrol bombs and shots were fired from the rooftop of the office of Tahir Hussain, and he had created an atmosphere of fear among the public. On 25 February, Ankit Sharma went out to buy some household items after coming back from office, and didn’t return. Ravinder Kumar filed a missing person report the next day. Then he came to know that a man was thrown into the Khajuri Khas nala from the Masjid of Chand Bagh pulia after he was killed. Following this information, the body of Ankit Sharma was recovered from Khajuri Khas Nala. His clothes were missing, except the underwear.
Ankit Sharma had sustained sharp injuries on his head, face, chest, back and waist. His face and other parts of his body had been burned by acid to conceal his identity.
The Delhi police had stated in its charge sheet that Ankit Sharma was specifically targeted by the mob that was led by Tahir Hussain. They had alleged a deep conspiracy behind the murder. The charge sheet says that Ankit Sharma was murdered outside the residence of Tahir Hussain in the Khajuri Khas area on February 25. After stabbing him multiple times, the mob threw his body into the nearby drain. A knife used in the murder and blood-stained clothes were also recovered.
Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and 10 others, Haseen alias Mullaji alias Salman, Nazim, Kasim, Sameer Khan, Anas, Firoz, Javed, Gulfam, Shoaib Alam alias Bobby, and Muntajim alias Musa, are accused in the case.
