Jailed pro-Khalistani MP from Khadoor Sahib, Punjab, and Waris Punjab chief Amritpal Singh has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking permission to attend the ongoing Monsoon Session from 29th July to 13th August. The letter was shared by Tarsem Singh, the father of the MP.
In a statement, Tarsem Singh said that Amritpal Singh was elected as an MP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, he has not been allowed to attend any session of Parliament.
According to the letter, Singh’s absence has prevented him from raising constituency issues and discharging his parliamentary responsibilities. Tarsem Singh claimed that Amritpal Singh has also been denied access to MPLAD funds, which has affected development work in Khadoor Sahib.
Amritpal cites drugs, floods and law and order
In the letter, Singh claimed that his presence in Parliament was necessary as he wanted to raise concerns affecting around 20 lakh people in his constituency, including the drug menace, recurring floods during the monsoon and the worsening law and order situation. He claimed that these issues required national attention. He further claimed that incidents of extortion, dacoity and kidnapping had increased in his constituency, creating fear among residents.He wrote, “These issues deserve urgent discussion in Parliament, and as the elected representative of my constituency, I consider it my duty to bring them before the House.”
Amritpal said he had submitted similar requests earlier but had not received permission. He urged the Speaker to allow him to attend the session under any conditions considered appropriate.
His father pointed out that Amritpal Singh remains lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh Central Jail even after the revocation of the National Security Act (NSA). He claimed that the continued detention was preventing the MP from carrying out his constitutional duties.
Previous attempts to attend Parliament
This is not the first time Amritpal has attempted to attend Parliament. In December 2025, he approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court after the Punjab government rejected his request for temporary release to attend the Winter Session. While opposing the plea, the Punjab government argued that if he entered Parliament, neither the executive nor the judiciary could regulate or place enforceable restrictions on his speech inside the Lok Sabha. He had also sought similar permission in July 2024 as well from Lok Sabha speaker.
Amritpal was arrested in April 2023 after a month-long manhunt. He was booked under the NSA and implicated in the Ajnala police station attack, during which armed supporters assaulted police personnel. During raids at locations linked to Amritpal Singh, pro-Khalistani material and weapons were recovered. The NSA was revoked in April 2026.
He won the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Khadoor Sahib while in jail, securing 4,04,430 votes and a 38.62% vote share. He was granted four-day parole to take the oath as an MP before being returned to Dibrugarh jail.
