Police have arrested 26-year-old Ashiq Ali in connection with the suspicious death of 22-year-old Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria, whose body was found near Azara in Guwahati early Saturday morning, 26th September. According to reports, the two lodged at a homestay in Dharapur called Rudra’s Kitchen.
Nimisha was found unconscious near Garal PHC around 4.30 am. Three men who found her took her to the health centre, from where she was referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Doctors at GMCH declared her brought dead. Her body has been sent for post-mortem examination. There have reportedly been assertions of injury marks on Nimisha’s body.

Father raises questions over the incident
Nimisha’s father said she left home around 5 pm on Friday, 25th September, telling her family that she was going out to eat. She later told them she would stay at a hostel with a friend.
He mentioned that at around 2 am, she called her mother and said, “Maa, they are kicking me in the chest. I cannot breathe.” Her father said there was no further response after the call. He has demanded punishment for those responsible for his daughter’s death.
Ali’s statement yet to be verified
Police said Ali has acknowledged being in a relationship with Nimisha. He told investigators that Nimisha died by suicide after hanging herself from a fan. However, police said they have not yet confirmed this account.
“We have apprehended the accused, and he is in police custody, and we are questioning him. We have sent the body for post-mortem, and we can get more information later,” informed Deputy Commissioner of Police Bolin Deori.
“We will not believe anything; we will investigate every angle,” Deori said. He added that police were examining their movements on Friday night, how they met, what happened before Nimisha was found unconscious, and the injuries recorded during the inquest.
The exact number of people present at the homestay at the time of the incident is also being established. The post-mortem report and further police investigation are expected to clarify the cause and circumstances of Nimisha’s death.
Police check homestay, CCTV footage
The investigation has also focused on Rudra’s Kitchen, where Nimisha and Ali had stayed. Police have seized the homestay’s registration book, CCTV footage and Nimisha’s mobile phone.
Deori said preliminary investigation found that guests may have been allowed to stay at the homestay without proper documentation. Police are now checking its records and the circumstances in which Nimisha and Ali stayed there.
According to police, the two had visited the homestay around five times in one month. Deuri said everyone at the homestay could be arrested if required as the investigation continues.
