Devendra Kula Vellalar community in Tamil Nadu seeks exclusion from Scheduled Caste category

In a rather unusual move, the Devendra Kulla Vellalar community in Tamil Nadu is seeking exclusion from SC status from the central government. According to reports, Puthiya Tamilagam leader K Krishnaswamy has stated that they do not want to be a part of the list of scheduled caste communities because they were facing social discrimination.

The community has reportedly stated that reservation breeds stigma and they are being looked down upon in society because of the SC status. They also added that over the years, the community has only been treated as a vote bank and they are now seeking upward social mobility and progress.

K Krishnasamy has reportedly informed that on May 6, over one lakh people from the community will gather in Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu and call for exclusion from the SC list.

Earlier in December, members of the Puthiya Tamilagam, which is a political party representing the Devendra Kula Vellalar community had held a pride march in Delhi, demanding their exclusion from the SC list. They have also been demanding the state government in Tamil Nadu to commonly name all their seven sub-castes, Pallar, Kudumbar, Pannadi, Kaalaadi, Kadayar, Devendrakulatar and Vadhiriyaar under one caste that is the Devendra Kula Vellalar.

JD(U) national general secretary Akhilesh Katiyar and BJP leader H Raja have also supported the demand of the community in the past. BJP President Amit Shah had also backed the demand for the sub-castes to be brought under one caste tag in the past. The President of Devendra Charitable Trust M Thangaraj had stated earlier that the community should never have been included in the SC list and they had owned land in the past. Asserting that clubbing all the sub-castes under one caste would be the first goal, he had added that the community will move the central government for exclusion from the SC list even if it meant letting go of the privileges of reservation and other benefits.

Indian Stand up comedians and the art of displaying convenient ignorance

The stand-up comedy scene is relatively new in India as compared to the West, but within its short span of existence, it has managed to get infested by supposed comedians, who either knowingly or unknowingly given the art a bad image.

We had earlier pointed out how some of these so-called comedians have been seen showing more interest in spreading political propaganda comprising of lies and fear-mongering, all the while being claiming to be ‘neutral’. This propaganda also extends to hurling insensitive insults almost exclusively against Hindus.

While a section of these comedians is more than ready to dole out a heavy dosage of almost unfair criticism, some of them are overtly reluctant to receive it back and resort to threatening their critics, to stifle dissent.

Apart from displaying intolerance and an almost obsessive knack for propaganda, the Indian stand up comedy has now been tainted by the convenient ignorance displayed by some so-called comedians.

The comedy troupe named Aisi Taisi Democracy – whose member Sanjay Rajoura is well known for threatening people after being triggered, today posted a tweet attacking the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan:

As per the so-called comedy group, the Modi government’s flagship Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a flop as 14 of the world’s most polluted cities are in India. While the pollution levels in the country are certainly concerning, it would be malicious to attack the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan for it as it has been envisioned to tackle sanitation and waste management, as pointed out by Twitter user Spaminder Bharti.

The lack of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’s jurisdiction when it comes to air pollution is also proven by the fact that TERI has been calling for a clean air mission along the lines of the said government scheme.

This wasn’t the only recent instance when the so-called comedians had overlooked basic facts to possibly further their agenda. Just yesterday, a comedian known as Atul Khatri had tried to take on newly appointed Tripura CM Biplab Deb, but displayed his lack of general knowledge in the process:

Here it can be seen that Khatri wasn’t aware of Biplab Deb being the Chief Minister of Tripura and not Arunachal Pradesh. He later deleted the tweet, but it wasn’t before people took a screenshot and lampooned him for his ignorance:

With such traits being displayed by some of our Desi stand up comedians, it raises the question whether they resort to such agenda peddling because of their ulterior motives, or simply because of their inability to be funny at a regular basis.

In a now deleted comment, Kolkata Metro seen defending act of beating up couples

In a shocking video, a young couple in Kolkata was allegedly beaten up for hugging in public in Kolkata Metro.

Following the outrage against public vigilantism, Metro Railway, Kolkata, through its social media channels, issued a statement that while no complaint has been registered, the department is looking at going to the bottom of the incident.

However, in what is now a deleted comment on the above post, Kolkata Metro was seen defending the act of mob vigilantism of commuters beating up the young couple.

The comment posted by the verified account of Kolkata Metro, one can read how it justifies the act of co-passengers by claiming it is the fallout of ‘vulgarity’ shown by the section of youth which ‘does not know decency and good manners’. Displaying more moral policing, the Metro Rail is seen to be saying such incidents will continue to happen if the younger generation does not ‘get themselves rectified’.

Many took to Twitter to express their anguish over this defence of vigilantism and even asked Kolkata Metro to confirm whether such a comment was indeed published by them.

While the comment now appears to have been deleted, Kolkata Metro has not yet denied making such a comment.

This Software helped the Delhi Police reunite 2,930 children with their families

It is one of the least talked about problems in India, and also one of the gravest. Every year thousands of children go missing in India, most of them are from the economic and social fringes of the society. The sections most vulnerable to such incidents are the migrant workers and slum dwellers. According to the Ministry of Women and Child development around 2, 42,398 children went missing between 2012 to 2017.

In an effort to curb such incidents activist Bhuwan Ribhu from “Bachpan Bachao Andolan” has been working on a facial recognition-based software for the last two years, but despite several attempts, he could not manage to convince any state to run the software as a pilot project. In the end, on April 5th, 2018 an intervention by Delhi High Court helped the Delhi Police to test their version of the software.

The software that Ribhu and his associates have created works on a facial recognition system which goes through data, looking for a match. Thus, when the New Delhi police ran the software with the data available on the government website, which has all the information about all reported missing children and the children currently lodged at various caring institutions, it worked like magic.

In a span of just four days the software recognized and matched around 2,930 children out of some 60,000 missing children and comparing them with 45,000 unidentified orphans in care institutions in Delhi. It took Delhi police just five days to reunite those 2,930 children with their families. This is an extraordinary feat considering the families had already lost all hope of getting their children back. Ribhu explained to The Better India why the software worked so well and with efficiency –

“India currently has almost 2 lakh missing children and about 90,000 lodged in various child care institutions. It is almost impossible for anyone to manually go through photographs to match the children. Therefore the FRS, which aids in making the match, is being promoted by Bachpan Bachao Andolan,”

“The Beti Bachao Andolan” has been pushing for a National Tribunal for Children along the lines of The National Green Tribunal, after the successful trail held in Delhi, suggestions have been made to offer it to other state police departments or overhaul the government website so that the FRS can be run internally, regardless of what happens next, this initiative is worthy of praise and deserves accolades. It might not end the missing child problem in India but surely is a step in the right direction. This is also an example of how social problems can be countered with technological solutions.

PM Modi says to farmers of Karnataka, Beej se le ke Bazaar tak, we are with you

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is addressing election rallies in poll-bound Karnataka, interacted with the farmers of Karnataka Kisan Morcha via the Narendra Modi App this morning.

PM Modi started out by quoting a farming song by to great Kannadiga poet Kuvempu and addressed to farmers as Yogis and proceeded to affirm his government’s commitment to farmers and asserted the role of farmers not only in the country’s economy but also providing active and practical solutions to the problems the farming sector faces. He added that though his MPs have tried a lot to work for the benefit of farmers the Siddaramaiah government has been apathetic to the issue. He further stated that farming is dependent on nature and a holistic approach is needed for the development be it irrigation, soil conservation or the protection of crops for nature does not work according to the government’s schedule. He said that his government has ensured schemes and their timely delivery for every stage in the crop cycle.

The PM added that about 3.5 crore farmers have been linked to the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna and out of which 14 lakh farmers are from Karnataka. The PM also added that his government has allocated Rs 11 lakh crore for farmers in the budget and the NDA government is committed to empowering farmers at every step, from sowing till selling in the markets (Beej se le ke Bazaar tak).

The PM stated that about 1 crore soil health cards have been issued in Karnataka and about 4000 hectares of land has been brought under micro irrigation in the state. Stating that his government is dedicated to double farmers’ income by 2022, he said that his government has ensured that the farmers get the MSP of 1.5 times that of the production costs for the notified crops. He added that his government has completed works on irrigation within 25-30 months which were pending since over three decades.

Prime Minister Modi asserted that the NDA government’s schemes will ensure that even the next generation will consider farming as a profitable profession, especially with influx of newer technologies in farming, including solar energy.

Shabana Azmi rues derailment of vaccination drives, but couldn’t be honest about who derailed it

Scientist and columnist Anand Ranganathan, who among other things is known for leading a team of scientists who identified a peptide molecule that can effectively prevent the interaction between malaria parasites and receptors found on RBCs thereby preventing the parasites from invading the RBCs and causing the disease, came down heavily on actor Shabana Azmi for being soft on those who are derailing the Kerala vaccination drive. In an Indian Express article, Azmi was talking about how rumours spread through WhatsApp against vaccination drives in Kerala made many parents keep their children at home instead of sending them to school so that they could not be vaccinated.

However, as Anand Ranganathan pointed out, she did not mention the details of those who were leading the anti-vaccination drive which often got violent. In November 2017, Mubasheer (23), Safan (26) and Faisal Babu (24) were arrested in Valanchery for barging into the vaccination area armed with knives alleging that the children were being vaccinated without the consent of parents. Deputy District Medical Officer (DMO) Renuka had said that rumours are spread over social media that such vaccination drives are carried out to contain the Muslim population and that the protein used for vaccination is made out of pig meat to discourage vaccination.

He also pointed out how Azmi does not talk of CPIM MLA Ariff spoke against Measles-Rubella vaccination by claiming it will harm the natural immunization of children. Ariff has taken up a fight for the right of people to reject vaccination. Anand Ranganathan also pointed out how Muslim students in Assam fled schools fearing forced sterilizations during the Japanese Encephalitis vaccination drive calling it ‘RSS vaccine’.

He further stated how in Jharkhand, Muslim mobs attacked Japanese Encephalitis vaccination workers in multiple cities alleging vaccination drives as BJP conspiracy to turn kids impotent.

Measles killed 49,200 Indian children in 2015, all of which could have been prevented if the kids were vaccinated. He pointed out how vaccination drives are hitting a wall in Muslim pockets where anti-vaxxers were running a propaganda against the very idea of vaccination.

He then urged Azmi to call out the particular community which is more likely to be against vaccination, as evident, and support the doctors who are trying to fight the orthodoxy and propaganda against vaccination.

Prominent Christian politician creates rift in Kerala’s ruling Communist alliance

KM Mani a prominent Christian politician in Kerala has resulted in a disturbance between the two left parties in the ruling communist alliance in Kerala, as reported by Mint. As per the report, the majority alliance partner Communist Party of India (Marxist) is trying to woo Mani into their coalition to retain power in the state.

Communist Party of India (CPI), the minority stakeholder in the alliance though isn’t happy about it and was a vocal critic of Mani’s possible inclusion, during its national meet in Kollam on Sunday. Mani is believed to be an influential Christian leader in central Kerala.

The report claims that the CPM wishes to defeat the Congress in the state at all costs, with the communist party speculating that an alliance with Mani’s Kerala Congress (M) would result in Congress further weakening in Kerala.

As per a New Indian Express report, the trouble began after dates for the Chengannur bypoll was announced, with the CPM wanting his support to win the by-poll. CPI’s state secretary Kanam Rajendran was quoted as saying that the ruling LDF didn’t need the backing of Mani, which was brushed aside by CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.

Incidentally the report claims that Mani too has jumped into the battle by alleging that CPI wants the CPM candidate standing in the by-polls to lose. He also confirmed the approach made by the CPM by claiming that the LDF candidate from Chengannur – Saji Cheriyan, had met him in person to seek his support.

This attack by Mani brought about a counter attack from CPI’s Kanam Rajendran who retorted that Mani wasn’t powerful enough to ensure victory on his own.

As per an Indian Express report, the Chengannur by-poll is an open contest with the CPM led LDF, Congress led UDF and BJP led NDA all having a good chance of winning it.

400 cops for 40 (Maoists) killed : Threatens an ex-journalist in his Facebook post

Maharashtra security forces expressed infuriation following a former journalist-turned-social activist on Facebook vowing that “at least 400 policemen would be killed to avenge the murder of 40 comrades” in two separate encounters in Gadchiroli district last week, with the top brass ordering probe into the threat handed publicly by the activist.

In his post uploaded on his Facebook page late on Saturday afternoon, Pune-based activist Raosaheb Dokhe dubbed the twin anti-Naxal operations as “fake encounters” and said those killed in the two operations were not Maoists.

The translation of the Marathi post reads, “Lal Salam…The Government has gone to town claiming that it had killed 40 Maoists. Were all the people killed in the encounters Maoists? How many policemen were killed? They were definitely not Maoists. In the fake encounters, 40 comrades were killed by the Government. The killings would definitely be avenged. There would be blood in return of blood. To avenge the elimination of 40 comrades, 400 policemen would be killed. It is a challenge. I ask the Fadnavis government to wait for a while (for the killings of policemen)…Your future is pretty bad. Lal Salaam”.

A day earlier on April 28, Dokhe had urged: “Let us kill all those police, who killed our comrades brutally.”

Contacted for his denouncing comments, the 51-year Dokhe said he is an “unarmed person” and his post was merely reflecting an ideology in the wake of what has happened in Gadchiroli.

Speaking to IANS, Raosaheb said “Does the post say I will do anything? What has happened is wrong… I have expressed apprehensions that more wrongs will take place in future. How can I be blamed?” However, he said that he was also “a wronged Dalit” and if injustice continues in this manner, he would not hesitate to “take to arms” to defend the truth and the Constitution.

Congress social media handle uses lies and ignorance to target Piyush Goyal

Gun for hire, leftist portal ‘The Wire’ had recently published a hilariously under-researched piece on how Union Minister Piyush Goyal had allegedly sold one of his companies for an inflated price and had not declared the same in his filing with the PMO. The Wire was wrong on both counts (and more) and we had demolished that piece here.

In line with the recent trend, where The Wire writes lies, and Rahul Gandhi repeats the lie, this time the official handle of the Indian National Congress has taken the responsibility of being the fool. In a series of tweets with the hashtag  #GoyalMustResign, the social media handle asked many questions which, they must have felt, were enough grounds for Goyal to resign.

In fact, the tweets of the Congress handle reveal only either the utter lack of knowledge or the severe lack of integrity in the Congress. The premise of all the tweets is this:

The total assets of Goyal’s company were Rs 14.24 crores and the Net Worth was Rs 12.5 crores as on 31-03-2014. Then how did Goyal manage to sell his company for almost Rs 50 cr within a few months?

The handle then imputes that the only “asset” which could make up for this difference was Goyal himself, and hence he must resign.

Any financially knowledgeable person would probably wonder whether to laugh or cry at this kindergarten level analysis. The Congress is correct in saying that the total assets and the net worth of the company were Rs 14.24 crores and Rs 12.5 crores respectively, but they fail to realise that these are only the book values of the assets and liabilities.

Sound accounting practice mandates that only historical costs i.e. the actual costs incurred are accounted in the books of any enterprise, thus all assets and liabilities are recorded at such costs. Further, Fixed Assets such as building are subjected to depreciation, which further reduces the carrying cost of such assets in the books of accounts.

On the other hand, sound valuation principles demand that the value to be considered for any asset or liability should be the fair market value, i.e. the value it would fetch in the open market. Obviously, this will almost always vary with the book value, especially in case of assets such as land, building, shares etc.

The Rs 12.5 crores quoted by the Congress is the book value and the Rs 50 cr valuation of the company is based on the market value of the assets. We had access to the valuation report of the company, prepared by an independent expert, and it clearly states that values of all assets and liabilities have been restated to reflect the “market value”.

Based on publicly available data, it is clear that a majority of the assets held by Goyal’s company are either real estate assets or investment in shares of other companies. It is well known that the real estate market has provided huge gains in the last decade or so. Also, after the 2008 financial crisis i.e. in the last 10 years, even the share market has yielded phenomenal returns.

Thus both the main asset classes of the company are of the nature wherein the book value (i.e. the cost minus depreciation if applicable) would be significantly lower than the market value. Hence, it was but natural for the net-worth as determined from the balance-sheet (which reflects book value) to vary significantly from the net worth determined by market value.

It is up to the reader to decide whether one may call the Congress foolish or malicious in its intent.
