15 rat bites, overdose of anti-rabies vaccine: Class 10 girl in Kammam residential school suffers from partial paralysis

In a bizarre incident, a class 10th student residing in the BC residential school in Khammam, Telangana suffered partial paralysis in one arm and one leg after over 15 doses of anti-rabies vaccine were administered to her within a few months. As per reports, the student, Samudra Lakshmi Bhavani Keethi has suffered 15 rat bites between February and November in her hostel. After each rat bite, the school authorities reportedly administered her anti-rabies vaccine.

The student is now admitted in a private hospital in Khammam and one of the doctors have stated that her partial paralysis may have been caused by the overdose of anti-rabies vaccines. Multiple students at the hostel have reportedly suffered rodent bites, raising serious questions over the sanitation conditions at the hostel. Keethi alone has been bitten 15 times by rodents. Each time she was bitten, she was taken by the hostel staff or teachers to a government hospital for rabies vaccine shots.

Keerthi’s mother Bindu has told The New Indian Express that she wasn’t informed about her daughter suffering rat bites initially and she was alerted only after they found out that Keerthi was unable to walk. The mother arrived at the hostel and had to carry Keerthi to a private hospital.

Khammam district collector Muzammil Khan has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
