70-year old Haryana farmer sells land, gives Rs 3 crore alimony to wife to get divorce after 44 years of marriage

A 70-year-old farmer in Haryana has finally obtained the decree of divorce after paying Rs 3 crore as permanent alimony to his wife after 44 years of marriage. The divorce was finalised after 18 years of legal battle.

The farmer and his now-divorced wife, who is 73 years old, had married in 1980. After having 3 children together, they parted ways citing differences between them. The farmer had moved a plea for divorce citing cruelty by the wife in 2006. But after 7 years, his divorce plea was rejected by the family court in Karnal in 2013. Later, he moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court to seek a dissolution of marriage.

As the matter stayed pending for 11 years, in November this year, the HC had asked the mediation and conciliation centre to find ways to end the litigation. Upon discussion, the farmer agreed to the demand by the wife and the 3 children to pay Rs 3 crores as permanent alimony. To arrange the amount he sold agricultural lands and paid Rs 2,16,00,000 in the form of a demand draft and another 50 lakhs in cash to the wife and the 3 children.

The wife and the 3 adult children of the couple have agreed not to demand anything else from the farmer.
