ABVP sweeps Odisha student polls; Amit Shah says results show youth support for “Nation First” ideology in his congratulatory message

Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) after the student organisation’s performance in Odisha’s student union elections. Shah said the results showed that the country’s youth supported the “Nation First” ideology rather than forces that spread what he described as falsehoods, confusion and chaos.

In a post on X, Shah referred to ABVP’s performance at Panjab University, Delhi University and 13 universities in Odisha. Congratulating the organisation’s workers, he described its latest results as a strong message from students. “Heartfelt congratulations to all the karyakartas of @abvpodisha for achieving a resounding victory in the Odisha Student Parliament elections. First Punjab University, then Delhi University, and now in 13 universities of Odisha, this victory of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad clearly conveys the message that the youth power of the country is firmly aligned not with the powerful forces that spread falsehoods, illusions, and chaos, but with the ‘Nation First’ ideology. This result is a stern response to the anti-national forces,” Shah wrote.

ABVP wins in more than 100 colleges and universities

ABVP Odisha also celebrated its performance, saying that students had supported the organisation in more than 100 colleges and universities across the state. In a post on X, it said young voters had rejected what it called the Opposition’s divisive politics and backed issues related to students and the state.

“Pushing divisive politics of the opposition to the back burner, Odisha‘s students and youth generation extended their unwavering support in the interest of students and the state, achieving resounding victories in over a hundred colleges and universities in the state #ABVP!” the organisation said.

In another post, ABVP shared its figures for elections across 346 colleges. According to the organisation, it won 208 president posts, 214 vice-president posts, 221 general secretary posts and 199 assistant general secretary posts.

“Odisha Students’ Mandate Is Clear – They Stand with # ABVP! ABVP’s winning streak continues across #Odisha! Out of 346 colleges, ABVP secured an impressive victory in key student union posts: President: 208; Vice President: 214; General Secretary: 221; Assistant General Secretary: 199. The message is loud and clear – Students Power, Nation’s Power!” it said.

ABVP wins seven of Odisha’s 13 Universities

The student union elections marked the return of campus polls in Odisha after eight years. ABVP emerged as the leading organisation, winning in seven of the state’s 13 universities, including Utkal University in Bhubaneswar.

The Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), the student wing of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), won in four universities. The results in the remaining two universities were mixed.

At Utkal University, the state’s oldest university, ABVP won seven of the nine posts, including president and general secretary. The Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) secured the vice-president and joint general secretary positions.

The elections saw ABVP and BCJD compete closely across campuses, with both organisations campaigning to attract student voters. According to the state’s higher education department, 6,649 candidates contested elections in 325 colleges and 13 state universities. ABVP also asserted victory in more than 60% of the 325 colleges that went to polls.
