AIMIM’s Mumbra corporator, Sahar Sheikh, is in soup after the Thane Tehsildar’s office recommended filing of an FIR against her father, Yunus Iqbal Sheikh, over the allegation of forging an OBC certificate. The recommendation followed an inquiry by Tehdildar Umesh Patil into a complaint filed by Siddiqui Farha Shadab Ahmed, the father of Sahar Sheikh’s rival candidate from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
Siddiqui Ahmed had challenged the validity of Sahar Sheikh’s caste certificate, alleging that her father obtained her caste certificate based on his OBC certificate, which was forged. After the inquiry into the allegation, a report was submitted to the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) on 25th March, which stated that Sahar Sheikh’s father misled four government agencies, including the State Election Commission. His OBC certificate of 2011 not only failed to comply with the official format but also lacked the mandatory signature of the SDO and omitted “State of Maharashtra” from its title.
The inquiry further revealed that Yunus Sheikh’s father and uncle were originally residents of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. As per the Maharashtra Caste Certificate Act, 2000, migrants are required to obtain caste certificates under Form-10. However, Yunus Sheikh reportedly forged documents to obtain a certificate under Form-8, which is reserved for native residents. Moreover, in 2018, he obtained a caste certificate for Sahar Sheikh using his own fake caste certificate. Besides, the Sheikh family lives in Thane, but the caste certificate for Sahar Sheikh was obtained from the Mumbai City Collector’s office.
Based on the findings of the inquiry, the Tehsildar recommended immediate cancellation of all such certificates obtained by Sheikh and the registration of an FIR against him.
