On Friday (24th April), a disturbing case came to light from the ‘Nibaran’ rehabilitation centre in Gauripur in the Dhubri district of Assam. The police launched a late-night raid after 5 Hindus were forced to jump from the top floor of the facility to escape torture.
According to reports, the victims were forced to convert to Islam under the guise of ‘better treatment’ by the staff and management of the rehabilitation centre.
The Hindus, admitted to the facility, were also coerced into eating beef (cow meat). If the victims refused, they were beaten with pipes and iron rods.
At the same time, they were subjected to physical and mental abuse. The victims were forced to do manual labour, clean toilets, and wash the clothes of the staff and owner.
As per reports, the management charged the family of the victims ₹12000 per month, but spent only about ₹2000 on their care. The Hindus, who were admitted to the rehab, were denied treatment for skin conditions such as scabies.
After the victims jumped from the top floor of the facility to escape torture, 3 of them sustained critical injuries. Once the police were informed, they conducted a raid around 11:00 pm on Friday.

One of the victims narrated, “They told us, ‘Change your religion, come to our faith, and we will keep you as staff here.’ They thrashed us with large motor pipes on the soles of our feet. When we asked for medicine for our skin infections, they just told us to eat boiled potatoes and rice without salt.”
It has now come to light that the centre was operating illegally without a valid registration for the last 3 years. The Dhubri police rescued 9 patients and detained 6 employees. The prime accused, identified as Zahirul Sheikh, is currently absconding.
Locals are now demanding strict action against ‘rehab jihad’ and centres forcing Hindu inmates to eat beef and convert to Islam.
