Free speech goes for a toss in Bangladesh as Yunus regime detains another actress

The interim government in Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, is cracking down on actresses over dubious charges of conspiring against the State. On Thursday (6th January), the police detained actress Sohana Saba in Dhaka.

According to reports, Saba was taken for interrogation at the Detective Branch office of the police located in Dhaka’s Mintoo Road.

The development was confirmed by Muhammad Talebur Rahman, DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division Deputy Commissioner.

On Thursday (6th February), prominent Bangladeshi actress Meher Afroz Shaon was arrested from the Dhanmondi area of Dhaka for criticising the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

According to reports, a mob also set fire to the ancestral house of Meher Afroz Shaon. The house belonged to Mohammad Ali, the father of the actress.

Shaon was arrested on dubious charges of ‘conspiring against the State.’ OpIndia had previously reported about attempts by the Yunus regime to stifle free speech in Bangladesh.
