Bangladesh: Hindus take out torchlight procession in Dhaka, demand arrest of radical Muslim mob that desecrated image of Lord Ram with slippers

On Friday (19th June) evening, Hindus in Bangladesh’s capital city Dhaka, took out a torchlight procession to protest the desecration of the image of Lord Ram by a Muslim mob.

According to reports, hundreds of people belonging to the Hindu community participated in the march and demanded the immediate arrest of those who targeted the picture of the Hindu deity with slippers. They also demanded exemplary punishment for the accused.

Hindus gathered in the Shahbagh intersection of Dhaka and raised slogans, seeking justice from the Bangladesh government. They also gave a 72-hour ultimatum to take action against the Muslim mob involved in this heinous act.

Hindus who participated in the march also said that protests would be organised in all 64 districts of Bangladesh if action is not taken against the accused. They also extended support to the programmes announced by the Bangladesh Puja Udjavan Parishad across the country on Saturday (20th June).

The protestors also vowed to submit a formal memorandum to the Ministry of Religious Affairs in case of inaction.

OpIndia had reported how a radical Muslim mob comprising members of Islami Chhatra Shibir and Hefazat-e-Islam took out an anti-Hindu procession in Dhaka on 13th June.

During the march, they attacked a banner featuring the image of Lord Ram with slippers. Chants of ‘Maaro maaro (hit it)’ could be heard in a viral video clip. The radical Muslims demanded the destruction of the under-construction idol of Lord Ram, located in Gaibandha district of Rangpur Division.

Opindia had previously highlighted how social media was rife with comments of Muslim groups, calling Lord Ram a symbol of Hindutva and inciting violence.
