Bangladesh: Interim govt advisor announces that Awami League will not be permitted to contest elections, hints Jamaat will be allowed to join govt

Bangladesh Interim government’s adviser Mahfuj Alam has said that the Awami League will not be allowed to contest the elections. He said that only pro-Bangladesh political parties will take part in the next election. Calling Awami League anti-Bangladesh and fascists, he said that the party would not be allowed to participate in the election in any way.

Mahfuj Alam, who is an adviser and Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, also hinted that Jamaat-e-Islami will be allowed to contest the polls and will be part of the govt. He said, “All political parties, whether BNP-Jamaat or others, along with student organizations, workers, women, and scholars who are pro-Bangladesh, will establish future governance through a fair electoral process.

Notably, while the interim govt lifted the ban on the Islamist party, its registration with the Election Commission remains cancelled. Jamaat’s election registration was cancelled by the Supreme Court in 2013. The party has appealed against the ruling after the Sheikh Hasina govt’s ban on it was lifted last year.

The interim govt in Bangladesh officially lifted the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir in August 2024. However, as the party’s election commission registration was cancelled by a court order, the govt can’t restore it.
