As the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise is currently underway in Karnataka, an incident of government officials being attacked in Bengaluru’s Devara Jeevanahalli area came to light. The attack took place around 1:30 pm on Wednesday (29th July) near Kausar Mosque in Roshan Nagar under the DJ Halli police station limits.
Two of the attackers, identified as Dastagir and Yarab, have been arrested. An FIR has been registered against Dastagir, Yarab, Iqbal, and other unidentified persons under Sections 121(1), 132, 352, and 3(5) of the BNS.
According to the FIR, complainant Pakeerappa (37), who is the Superintendent of the Slum Development Board, was appointed as the supervising officer for 11 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) carrying out the SIR process in Ward No. 47 of the Pulikeshinagar Assembly constituency. On the day of the incident, he went to the area near Kousar Masjid, 18th Cross, Roshan Nagar, D.J. Halli.
Pakeerappa saw the accused Dastagir and Yarab arguing with a Booth Level Officer (BLO) over an SIR form. As stated in the FIR, they informed the BLO that they were residents of Jayanagar. Therefore, the BLO advised them to obtain their SIR form from Jayanagar since that was their place of residence.
When Pakeerappa intervened and asked the accused why they were creating a disturbance, one of the accused remarked, “Who are you to question us?” and punched him in the face, causing his lip to bleed. Then another accused punched the complainant on his eyebrow and back. Locals present at the scene intervened and saved the complainant.
The complainant informed his senior officers about the incident and went to the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Hospital for medical treatment. An investigation into the incident is underway.
Notably, the SIR exercise in Karnataka has been going on smoothly. However, some people in areas, including Kodagu district and parts of Bengaluru, have claimed that they have not received the SIR forms. In Bengaluru, such complaints were reported from Byatarayanapura, Hebbal-Kempapura, and slum areas such as D.J. Halli and Bhangi Colony. The Election Commission is addressing such concerns through the available mechanism.
In July 2025, 3 people were sentenced to seven years of hard imprisonment by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court in Bengaluru. They are identified as Syed Ikramuddin (alias Syed Naveed), Syed Atif and Mohammed. The case pertained to the August 2020 riots at the DJ Halli and KG Halli.
