Raid ordered by District Administration
The inspection was being conducted on the orders of District Magistrate Vinod Duhan. The administration had constituted two teams to check nursing homes, ultrasound centres and pathology labs to see whether they were operating as per rules. One of the teams was led by ADM Dr Rambabu.
During the raid, the team arrived at Bachpan Neo and Child Hospital, located on Referral Road in Forbesganj. Officials were examining documents and facilities when an argument broke out between the hospital administration and the raiding team.
Slap incident and clash
During the argument, ADM Dr Rambabu slapped Dr Deepak Kumar. Soon after, a fight broke out between both sides. The whole incident was recorded in a video that has since gone viral on social media platforms.
After the clash, supporters of the doctor locked members of the raiding team inside a room and were not allowed to leave for almost half an hour. When news of the incident reached senior authorities, the SDM and police rushed to the hospital. The door was opened, and the officials were taken out safely.
Doctors on strike
After the incident, the Indian Medical Association reacted strongly. Meetings were held by the Araria, Purnia and Supaul units. Local IMA representatives said that disrespect or physical assault of doctors would not be accepted under any circumstances.
Private doctors in the district have stopped their services from Friday in protest. As a result, many patients are facing difficulties, especially those who depend on private hospitals for treatment.
Doctor’s statement and administration response
According to Dr Deepak Kumar, the raiding team misbehaved and used force during the inspection. He said that the entire incident is recorded on CCTV. He also said that he reacted in self-defence during the fight.
Civil Surgeon Dr K.K. Kashyap reached the spot after receiving information and assured that the matter would be investigated properly. The district administration has been claiming that it is necessary to check hospitals for compliance with rules. Doctors have said that inspections should be carried out in a respectful manner.
At present, the situation in the district is tense, and health services are also affected.
